Getting down to (small) BUSINESS

personalpowercoachbusinessHave you ever dreamed of running your own small business?  Was this dream followed by the word someday?  Well, why not today?  Oops, did your heart just skip a beat?

Years ago starting your own small business represented a major financial investment: renting office space, fax machine, photocopier, computer, business phone, business cards, insurance.   The start-up costs for a small business back in 2001 almost guaranteed you would need some sort of initial financing. But things have changed. You’ll find that most of these expenses have all been consolidated and made less expense due to technology.  If you have access to a computer and a cell phone, congratulations, you now have all the technology you need to begin your own home-based business.

So what’s stopping you from getting started?  Well, if you are like most people, right about now there’s a little voice in your head, and it’s saying things like, “Naw, I don’t need to start my own business, I’m doing fine,” or “What if I start and everything falls apart? What if I look like a loser?  What if I fail?”  You may believe this is the voice of reason, but it’s not.  It’s the voice of FEAR.  It’s the voice that says you are terrified of stepping outside of your comfort zone.  quotesIt will control and manipulate each and every decision you make in life…if you let it.

So I have a simple solution.  When that voice of doom and gloom starts to creep into your thoughts, simply ask yourself, “Imagine what I will learn from this?”  Look, every successful entrepreneur has worked, lived and played outside of their comfort zone, and lived to talk about it.  Most will agree that they learned more from their shortcomings than from their successes. We all have the capacity to love, learn, and to apply our past experiences to the task at hand.   Whether its that 10 pounds that needs to go, or the business empire that needs to be built, make 2014 the year you get down to business.

So here’s the takeaway:

Starting your own business it doable and you can get started right now. Take out a pen and paper and start putting together a business plan.  It can be short, it can be long, it just needs to be.  Start with a mission statement, “A computer on every desk!” (Okay, Gates has that one already).  The plan doesn’t have to be perfect.  You’ll work out the details later, when it matters.  What matters now, is that you take action now.

Like many things, in the beginning you don’t necessarily need a destination, merely a direction.

Happy New Year.
